COMA-CHI and MeccaGodZilla team up for new Spiritual Bitch EP

COMA-CHI, a rap legend and pioneer of women in the Japanese Hip-Hop scene, releases a new EP entitled “Spiritual Bitch” on 06.21.2022. With music production from Brooklyn-based artist MeccaGodZilla, the EP is a collaborative effort that furthers the evolution of the fusion of Japanese tradition, Hip-Hop, and spirituality that was shown in COMA-CHI’s previous works.
According to COMA-CHI, the title “Spiritual Bitch” is a paradox that juxtaposes two incompatible elements of “spiritual” and “bitch.” This paradox expresses the calm yet fierce, elegant, strong, and spiritually discerning essence that women can embody as they continue to navigate an ever-changing, and sometimes insanely toxic, male-dominated world.
Lead single “Watch Your Mouth” epitomizes the ancient Japanese idea of “Kotodama (言霊)” aka the spirit of words, as COMA-CHI contributes fiery lyrics about protecting oneself from the negative words and intentions of men that don’t have a woman’s best interests in mind.
While living in Tokyo in 2010 and 2012, MeccaGodZilla became an avid supporter of COMA-CHI’s live shows and album releases in Japan. He enthusiastically pitched this collaborative opportunity to work together during the pandemic. He states:
“COMA-CHI reminds me of like a Japanese blend of MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Lauryn Hill but she’s a pioneer in her own right that has encouraged countless other women to rap and sing in Japan. I couldn’t wait to work with her and as I grew more spiritually and saw her music evolve more spiritually over the years, it was a no-brainer to reach out to her through a good friend to see if we can make some magic happen. Thankfully for me, COMA-CHI was 100% with it, and working with her was the most fun I’ve had working with any artist to date – she’s super talented and amazing to work with.”
To align further with their own spirituality while honoring the Earth’s energy, COMA-CHI and MeccaGodZilla release “Spiritual Bitch” on the first day of the Summer Solstice, June 21, 2022, as a collab between their indie record labels Queen’s Room and MANAFEST VISION respectively.
The leading single “Watch Your Mouth” was released as NFT in Metaverse on May 25, 2022 from the platform of the up-and-coming NFT label DAO Records.
